Identifying KeywordsLearn about core search terms by consulting broad overviews in a special subject encyclopedia, then take a deeper dive with review articles from scientific journals. Other sources include subject headings in the library catalog and article databases. At Salve, using the multidisciplinary database Academic Search Complete is a good place to begin, as you'll see assigned scholarly subject headings for each article in a set of results, which can help you brainstorm keywords for furture searches.
You should start this process as soon as you decide on a topic and/or develop research questions, then continue to build your list throughout your inquiry. Note: as you learn more about your topic, your keywords might need to be updated, as you narrow and refine your research.
