Guide Purpose

This research guide will help you find primary and secondary sources that will help you with your HIS 320 research paper.

Your history librarian is Dawn Emsellem. I'm happy to meet with you if you have any questions about your research. You can easily see my schedule and book an appointment with me.

If you need assistance and my schedule doesn't work for you, please don't hesitate to contact a librarian.

Visit the library's home page at https://library.salve.edu/

Your professor has clear expectations as to what types of sources he expects you to use. From your assignment description:

SOURCES
You must use both primary and secondary sources in your research paper. You must use at least eight (8) secondary sources and at least three (3) primary sources.

Possible primary sources include:

  • Letters
  • Diaries, Journals, and Memoirs
  • Contemporary Newspapers and Periodicals
  • Records of the Continental Congress and Other Government Documents
  • Contemporary Artwork and Music
  • Contemporary Literature

Please Note: A collection of letters counts as one primary source regardless of how many individual letters you cite from that collection. A single newspaper (for example, the Newport Mercury) counts as one primary source regardless of how many issues of that paper you cite.

In selecting primary sources to use, online sources are acceptable. However, you may only use sources available on websites maintained by the Library of Congress, the National Archives, the United States armed forces, colleges and universities, research libraries, museums, and historical societies. Sources on any other type of website require my approval.

Your secondary sources must be scholarly books and articles. Your bibliography must include at least five (5) books.
