Learn about Composting!

In the U.S., food is the single most common material sent to landfills, comprising 24.1 percent of municipal solid waste, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

When food and other organic materials decompose in a landfill where anaerobic (without oxygen) conditions are present, bacteria break down the materials and generate methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. Wasted food is responsible for 58% of landfill methane emissions.

Check out our Composting page on this guide to see how you can get started and make a big difference in reducing your carbon footprint.

Go plant-based one meal a day for one week

Eating a plant-based diet is one way to address climate change. The food system contributes about 21 to 37% of greenhouse gases, and animal agriculture is a significant contributor.

The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that 1,800-2,500 gallons of water go into the production of a single pound of beef. By comparison, producing a plant-based burger uses 75-95% less water.

Plant-based diets may reduce chronic health conditions. Learn more about adding plant-based foods to your diet.
