UNV-102-10 & 11: Examining the World (Oberman): Articles

Resources on ecocriticism and environmental literature to support your research and writing assignments.

Library Research Tools

Why use library databases? The main reason is that you'll have better access to high-quality eBooks, periodicals, and scholarly journals - all the kinds of materials you will need for successful college research.

Library databases take some practice to navigate, but once you get the hang of it, you can fine-tune your search with specialized filtering tools that you'll never find in a standard web search.

Articles from Multidisciplinary Databases

Multidisciplinary databases provide access to content from - you guessed it - many subject disciplines, making these a great place to start searching for journal articles. Notice these tools are identified by the vendor that publishes the databases, i.e., EBSCO or ProQuest. You can start searching for articles from EBSCO databases in the search box within the Articles tab.

Click on the ProQuest link, and you'll be searching content from those databases (and not EBSCO)

Notice the different filtering features between these two giant databases. Now compare these to a database you may have used in high school: JSTOR. Which filters are most helpful for you? Sometimes, it might depend on your research assignment.

Newspapers

McKillop Library subscribes to several major newspapers to help you keep up to date on news from around the world. Use the Databases A-Z tool on the library home page to locate our newspaper research landing page.

Many large national daily newspapers are accessed via database vendors such as ProQuest. This large database indexes articles from major newspapers like The Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post. These are all accessed via the library portal and no additional login is required.

The library has a separate subscription to the New York Times digital edition, and in order to access unlimited full text, you will need to make a separate account using your Salve email address.

Magazines and Academic Journals

If you know a specific magazine or journal title, you can use the journal search tool to see if the library has a subscription and what the date coverage is.
